Why are dolphins in Aomori?
Dolphins are distributed from the coast of the Japan to the four northern islands, and come to Mutsu Bay from April to June.
Why do dolphins come to Aomori at this time of year?
We asked Professor Shigeto Kiyokawa of the Faculty of Sociology at Aomori University, who is continuing research on dolphins in Mutsu Bay.

Sardines are a favorite food of dolphins. The sardines enter Mutsu Bay on the ocean current from the Japan sea. It is said that dolphins also come to Mutsu Bay in pursuit of it.

Mutsu Bay is a warm current that flows in from the Japan Sea via the Tsugaru Strait and the sea where melt snow from Hakkoda and other places flows in and collides, so plankton is abundant at the border, and many small fish that feed dolphins, especially their favorite sardines, gather, and dolphins come in search of sardines.

In addition, Mutsu Bay is free of sharks and killer whales, which are natural enemies of dolphins, so it may be a safe place for dolphins.
